From Kuppam To Cuddalore

The HP team utilized its Kuppam learning for rebuilding the tsunami ravaged district of Cuddalore in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

The traumatized fishing community in the Cuddalore district was looking for new employment opportunities and increased information access.

These were the areas which the HP team had handled successfully in its Kuppam project. Fishing, which was the primary means of employment at Cuddalore, got wiped out due to the tsunami. This prompted the HP team, in partnership with the district administration, to develop entrepreneurial ventures like the Village Photographer Scheme.

As the personal records of many Cuddalore residents were destroyed, the district administration/NGOs had a difficult task identifying people and updating census records in order to provide citizens with the necessary aid.

Value Creation For Hp

At Kuppam, HP pilot-tested solutions made for developing markets and their potential for success. At Kuppam, the company tested products like the low-cost inkjet printer and the HP Multi-User 441 Desktop Solution, which also formed the foundation for the information center at Cuddalore. HP re-engineered some of its existing products to suit the rigors of the rural environment and also worked on technologies which enabled local language interfaces in order to make technology access easier for the rural populace.

By developing products for the emerging markets and using them in areas like Kuppam and Cuddalore, the company strengthened its position as a technology and solutions provider for emerging markets...
